Content
Introduction
Excellent
Excellent attention-getter, construction focus established, gives very brief introduction of topic, and stated claim, (i.e. main argument you'll be trying to prove), previews the main points.
Good
The speaker introduces the speech adequately, including an attention getter and a preview of the main points of the speech. Claim isn't as clearly expressed.
Fair
The speaker introduces the speech, but some details are unclear. The introduction lacks an attention getter and/or a preview of main points.
Needs Improvement
The speaker fails to introduce the speech OR the introduction is not useful in indicating what the speech was about.
Body of Speech
Excellent
Supporting points to prove main argument work and are clearly distinguished with supportive details. Clear, paraphrased examples and short quotations used extremely effectively. Board is used extensively to support claims. Transitions are effectively used for coherent movement from point to point.
Good
General body organization isn't clear or well-developed. Some points are sufficiently supported but some unsupported. Board is used to support claims. Transitions are okay, but not as unique or distinct as the could be.
Fair
Organization lacks detail to the extent that some argumentative impact is compromised. Transitions need work. Board not used to its potential.
Needs Improvement
The speech is difficult to follow due to a lack of organization. Little detail is given to support the main points. Difficult to identify introduction, body, and conclusion. Board is hardly used in the presentation.
Reasons
Excellent
Points are supported with sufficient, relevant and sound reasoning / discussion, thoroughly explaining examples and connecting back to central claim.
Good
Some reasoning present, but points are not thoroughly proven. Examples are discussed and somewhat connected back to central claim.
Fair
Very little reasoning present, points are not thoroughly proven. Some examples are briefly discussed, but not connected back to central claim.
Needs Improvement
Reasoning not present, rush from point to point without discussion. Points are not proven. Examples are not discussed or connected back to central claim.
Conclusion
Excellent
Alerts audience to the presentation conclusion. The speaker summarizes the main points, ties back to the introduction to bring the speech full circle, and leaves the audience with satisfying, provocative final thoughts and a powerful clincher.
Good
Alerts audience to the presentation conclusion. The speaker recaps main points but misses at least one key component of conclusion (final thoughts, clincher, tie-back to intro...etc.)
Fair
Ending is weak or not present; the speaker concludes the speech in a disorganized fashion. Two or more important components are not present.
Needs Improvement
No conclusion; Ends suddenly. Most parts of conclusion are missing.
Board
Excellent
Excellent balance of images and text. Includes appropriate and effective support for essay presentation. Board gives a dramatic and thought-provoking representation of the book, as well as the essay argument.
Good
Good balance of images and text. Includes appropriate support for essay presentation. Board gives an interesting representation of the book and the essay argument.
Fair
Imbalance of images and text. Includes some support for essay presentation. Board is a bit confusing, doesn't leave a clear impression of the book or the essay argument.
Needs Improvement
Obvious imbalance of images and text. Includes very little/poor support for essay presentation. Board is confusing, doesn't leave a clear impression of the book or the essay argument.
Presentation Skills
Eye Contact
Excellent
Consistently and effectively uses eye contact to establish rapport with audience. Rarely uses speaker notes and endeavours to maintain interaction with audience.
Good
The speakers look up occasionally and focus on just a few people during the speech. Some use of speaker notes. Seems a bit disengaged from audience for short periods of time.
Fair
Obvious use of speaker notes. Seems disengaged from audience for noticeable periods of time.
Needs Improvement
The speaker seldom looks at the audience. Reads speech from notes. Avoids eye contact with audience. Only occasional and sporadic glances.
Voice
Excellent
Natural variation of vocal characteristics (pace, pitch, power, pauses, articulation) to heighten interest and match message appropriately. Few, if any, verbal fillers.
Good
Some limited variation of vocal characteristics. Use of pace, pitch, power and pauses seems inconsistent at times. Some verbal fillers.
Fair
The students could be heard most of the time but at certain points were inaudible and/or inarticulate. Little pitch variation. Pacing was too slow/fast. Verbal fillers were noticable and frequent.
Needs Improvement
Audience had difficulty hearing and/or understanding much of the speech due to monotone or inappropriate variation of vocal characteristics. Inconsistent with verbal message. Excessive fluency errors interfered with message comprehension. Excessive use of vocalized fillers.
Timing
Excellent

Good
2 minute over required time or less than the required time.
Fair
3 minutes over required time or less than the required time
