Capitalization	Novice Did not capitalize any words at beginning of sentences.	Apprentice Capitalized some (half) words at beginning of sentences.	Proficient Capitalized most words at beginning of sentences.	Distinguished Capitalized all words at beginning of sentences.
Ending Punctuation	Novice Did not use end marks.	Apprentice Used some end marks.	Proficient Used end marks on most sentences.	Distinguished Used end marks on all sentences appropriately.
Complete Sentences	Novice Sentences are not complete; no coherent thought.	Apprentice Sentences have a subject and verb and is complete, but not in agreement.	Proficient Sentences are complete, but do not make sense.	Distinguished Sentences are complete, with subject-verb agreement, make sense, and are appropriate.
Number of sentences	Novice Student wrote no complete sentences.	Apprentice Student wrote one complete sentence.	Proficient Student wrote two complete sentences.	Distinguished Student wrote three complete sentences.
