Story Elements Rubric
	Needs Improvement 0 pts	Fair 1 pts	Very Good 2 pts	Excellent 3 pts
Characters	Needs Improvement Student cannot identify either character by name and cannot give any details about them.	Fair Student can only identify one of the characters by name, and can give little or no details about either character.	Very Good Student can identify all characters by name and can give some details about at two one of them.	Excellent Student can identify all characters by name giving specific details about them while connecting their own experiences to those of the characters.
Setting	Needs Improvement Student cannot identify where the story takes place.	Fair Student can identify where the story takes place, but cannot give any details about it.	Very Good Student can identify where the story takes place and can give at least one detail about it.	Excellent Student can identify where the story takes place and can give two or more details about it.
Conflict/Problem	Needs Improvement Student cannot identify any conflict/problem in the story.	Fair Student can identify one minor conflict/problem in the story.	Very Good Student can identify more than one minor conflict/problem in the story.	Excellent Student can identify the major conflict/problem in the story and can think of solutions.
Connections	Needs Improvement Student cannot make any real life connections to the story or characters.	Fair Student can make small connections to characters or story, but cannot provide details.	Very Good Student can identify with characters and relate real life connections to the story.	Excellent Student can identify with the characters, and can make real life connections to the story with detail.
