	Missing 0 pts	Fair 2 pts	Good 3 pts	Strong 4 pts
Opening 5 pts	Missing Opening missing or does not relate to topic	Fair Opening simply states the topic.	Good Opening grabs readers attention in unique way.	Strong Opening uses vivid detail and/or concise dialogue to put the reader immediately into the story.
Organization 10 pts	Missing Essay lacks organizational structure.	Fair Essay is organized, but some paragraphs, sentences, or ideas are misplaced.	Good Essay requires a little restructuring or editing but primarily well organized.	Strong Essay is well organized and the organization adds to the quality of the writing.
Level of Detail 15 pts i.e. "show, don't tell"	Missing Essay contains no detail.	Fair Essay contains very little detail.	Good Essay contains some detail in support of the prompt.	Strong Essay contains vivid detail in support of the prompt.
Expression of self 15 pts i.e. tells a story about YOU, as yourself	Missing Essay does not tell anything about the writer	Fair -Essay does not tell much about the writer.	Good -Essay explains some things about the writer, but does not distinguish the writer from others. OR the essay tells about someone or something else, attempting to portray something to a writer	Strong Essay clearly demonstrates how the writer is unique and separates the writer from other writers. OR essay tells about someone or something else, helping the reader make a specific inference about the writer.
editing/drafting -effort 5 pts	Missing The essay appears to lack proofreading and/or editing.	Fair Final essay does not show evidence of much editing or revising	Good Final essay shows evidence of some editing and revising but there are still some errors in the essay.	Strong Final essay clearly shows careful editing and revising to produce a near-perfect essay.
