Ball behind head

Needs Work

Student brings ball behind back or brings ball to chest. Student shows no knowledge of bringing ball behind their head.
Progressing

Student brings the ball behind their head, but does not point at their target. Does not demonstrate a fluid motion while bringing the ball behind their head.
Proficient

Student brings the ball behind their head. The student creates a "J" shape with their arms. The student uses opposite arm to point at the target.
Step with opposite foot

Student does not step at all while beginning to throw.
Progressing

Student steps with the same side foot as their throwing hand.
Proficient

Student steps with their non-dominant foot and points it towards the target.
Trunk rotation

Needs Work

Student stands straight up while performing throwing motion. Does not demonstrate knowledge of hip or spine rotation and does not shift weight properly throughout throw.
Progressing

Student does not briefly shift weight to their back leg, but does rotate their hips and spine throughout the throw. Student also does not release the ball at the correct release point.
Proficient

Student briefly shifts weight to back leg (dominant leg) and brings the ball overhead. The student releases the ball above their eyes while simultaneously rotating their hips and spine towards their non dominant leg.
Followthrough

Needs Work

Student stops throwing motion after releasing the ball. Does not finish trunk rotation and does not bring throwing arm across body.
Progressing

Student continues throwing motion after releasing the ball, but their throwing arm does not cross the midline of their body. The student's throwing arm motion ends on the same side.
Proficient

Student rotates trunk properly and continues throwing motion (slapping the knee) throughout the entire throw. Throwing arm completely crosses midline of body and ends motion near the opposite knee.
