Injectable anesthetics

Student failed to correctly give the injection.
Student failed to record the medications correctly in the patient's chart.

Student verified correct size syringe, fresh needle of appropriate size, labeled syringe contents, drew up medication and eliminated any air bubbles.
Injection was administered at the appropriate injection site by tenting the skin to make an inverted V, inserted the needle, drew back on the plunger to verify it was not in a vein or through both sides of the skin, then injected the medication and recorded it in the patient's chart.
Inhalant anesthetics

Student did not have correct size mask
Student did not hold onto patient while administering the gases.
Student failed to correctly monitor the vital signs.

Student determined the correct size mask for the patient, connected the mask to the breathing tubes, placed lubricant in the eyes if necessary, turned the oxygen on to between 2-5 L/min, and held the patient's nose in the mask while receiving oxygen. If anesthetic was used, student monitored vital signs and intubated when patient was in Stage II and swallowing reflex was dimished.
Endotracheal intubation

Intubation supplies were not all out.
Intubation was not successful.
Tube was not tied correctly.
Cuff was not properly inflated.
Eyes were not lubricated.

Student chose correct size tubes, larygoscope, syringe, tie and lidocaine for cats, the tube from the thoracic inlet to 2 inches beyond the incisors, checked the cuff, gently pulled the tongue straight out until the epiglottis was exposed, using the tip of the tube, gently pushed until the glottis was visualized and placed the tube into the glottis and tied it behind the patient's canine teeth or ears.
The cuff was gently and a breath was given, listening for any leaks.
