Essay Requirements	Excellent (A) Essay responds fully to the prompt. Essay is fully developed and uses good evidence from the text to support response. (At least 3 well chosen quotations.)	Good (B) Essay does a good job of fulfilling the requirements.	Needs improvement (C) Essay does an adequate job of fulfilling the requirements.	Poor (D, E) Essay does a poor job of fulfilling the requirements.
Intro/Thesis	Excellent (A) Includes a clear, well-written introduction that clearly indicates your response and sets a direction for your essay.	Good (B) Thesis/intro are adequate, but could be more clearly written.	Needs improvement (C) Introduction is brief, not fully developed. A thesis statement is present, but weak.	Poor (D, E) No introduction or thesis statement present.
Organization	Excellent (A) Well thought-out and organized. Follows a coherent sequence. Has an interesting beginning, a solid conclusion, and several well-developed body paragraphs.	Good (B) For the most part, essay sticks to a solid organization. May occasionally lack focus/direction.	Needs improvement (C) Attempts to stick to a solid organization. May jump around or be confusing at times.	Poor (D, E) Essay is disorganized and very difficult to follow.
Conventions	Excellent (A) Your paper contains no errors in grammar and/or mechanics. Quotes/references to the text are cited with page numbers.	Good (B) The paper contains a few errors.
