Fiction: There is strong evidence
of a thorough understanding of
the core elements of fiction and a careful
analysis of these elements in
relationship to the text.
Nonfiction: Student shows
exceptional understanding and
analysis of the purpose and
effects of informational text as
it relates to his or her reading,
including structure, use of facts,
bias, opinions, emotional
language, historical context, etc.

Fiction: There is sufficient
evidence of an understanding of
the core elements of fiction and
a reasonable attempt to analyze
the significance and/or effect of
these elements on the text.
Nonfiction: Student shows
expected understanding of the
elements of informational text
and makes a reasonable attempt
to analyze the significance
and/or effect of these elements
on the text.

Fiction: Student demonstrates a
shallow understanding of the
core elements of fiction,
providing a basic summary of
events from the text, with little
or no analysis present.
Nonfiction: Student shows a very
limited understanding of
informational text, providing
mostly a brief summary of the
text, with little or no analysis
present.

Presentation is well-rehearsed
with a smooth delivery in a
conversational style; highly
effective rhythm and pacing;
audience engagement is
strongly evident.

Presentation is rehearsed;
speaker is understandable;
pacing is effective; audience is
reasonably engaged.

Presentation is hesitant, choppy,
and unrehearsed; speaker is
difficult to understand; little or
no audience engagement.
