ESL Speaking Rubric
	Poor 1 pts	Fair 2 pts	Good 3 pts	Excellent 4 pts
Grammar	Poor All questions were answered with incorrect grammar.	Fair Answers did not fully use correct grammar, but was understandable.	Good Grammar was awkward at times but always understandable.	Excellent Grammar was clear and accurate.
Pronunciation and Clarity	Poor Student's pronunciation was incomprehensible, making understanding impossible.	Fair Student's pronunciation made understanding difficult, but with effort, possible to guess what student was trying to say.	Good Student's pronunciation was understandable with some error. Still difficult to understand, but pronunciation was good enough to understand what he/she was trying to say.	Excellent Student's pronunciation good enough to understand what every word said was. "Accent" noticeable, but not enough to take away from understanding.
Fluency	Poor Student was unable to ask or respond to most questions.	Fair Student took a long time to ask and respond to questions. A lot of unnatural pauses and hesitations.	Good Student was able to ask and answer the questions, but with some difficulty. Use of some awkward/unnatural pauses, but overall speech was not difficult to follow.	Excellent Students were able to communicate clearly with no difficulty. Student asked and answered questions with almost no hesitation, and no trace of unusually long pauses or hesitation.
Comprehension	Poor Student was unable to comprehend most questions. Questions had to be repeated several times. Even very simple sentences.	Fair The student showed little comprehension of questions. Questions had to be repeated, but all questions were eventually answered.	Good The student understood most of what was asked of him/her, and responded in a more or less appropriate manner.	Excellent The student fully understood the questions asked and answered correctly.
Vocabulary	Poor Did not use any learned vocabulary in responses.	Fair Use very little vocabulary or answered question with very limited or off-topic answers.	Good Used a good amount of vocabulary used in class.	Excellent Used appropriate vocabulary which we have learned in class. Did not give any off-topic information that did not fit the situation.
