Attention to Task	Distinguished Responses clearly address all parts of each writing prompt, including the key focus of the prompt.	Proficient Responses do not address all parts of each writing prompt but writing still addresses the key focus of the prompt.	Apprentice Responses address only parts of the writing prompt and do not always address the key focus.	Novice Responses rarely address the key focus of the writing prompt.
Response Quality	Distinguished Responses are fully developed and strongly on-topic.	Proficient Responses are well developed and remain on-topic for the most part.	Apprentice Responses are somewhat developed and remain on-topic some of the time.	Novice Responses are underdeveloped and do not remain on-topic.
Interpretation	Distinguished Exceptional understanding of the whole text; Interpretation is perceptive and well-supported with examples from the text. Contains many well-developed text-to-self connections.	Proficient Basic understanding of the whole text; interpretation is thoughtful and supported with some examples from the text. Contains some developed text-to-self connections.	Apprentice Some understanding of portions of the text/text as a whole; interpretation lacks insight and/or support from the text. Text-to-self connections are few to none.	Novice Literal or Limited understanding of the text.
Completion	Distinguished Journal contains all 8 assigned responses; is organized.	Proficient Journal contains most assigned responses; is organized.	Apprentice Journal is missing more than 2 assignments; makes an attempt at organization.	Novice Journal is missing most assignments; no logical organization.
