How well does the student maintain a steady beat with the metronome? What is the extent of the students coordination?

Poor

Student cannot externalize the beat in any way. Coordination is non-existent.
Decent

Student is unable to maintain a steady beat with the click of the metronome and takes a while to get back on the beat. Coordination is weak or almost non-existent.
Fair

Student can somewhat able to maintain a steady beat, but teeters off the beat after a prolonged amount of time. Takes a moment to adjust to new tempos. Coordination is somewhat present, but cannot maintain simultaneous hand and foot motion for a prolonged amount of time.
Good

Student can stay on beat and has minor blips when keeping time. Is able to adjust to different tempos. Coordination is strong, yet has some "hiccups", but overall is good.
Excellent

Student is able to externalize the tempo with ease. Student has no problem adjusting to varying tempos. Coordination is excellent. Student has no problem moving hands and feet simultaneously.
Identifying Tempo Changes

Can the student differentiate between faster and slower tempos?

Poor

Decent

Student can only tell the difference between drastic changes in tempo. Unable to identify tempo differences less than 30 BPM.
Fair

Student is able to differentiate between most tempos, but does struggle with identifying slight changes in tempo, but does well overall. Can identify changes in tempo less than 20 BPM.
Good

Student is able to differentiate between most tempos, but does struggle with identifying slight changes in tempo, but does well overall. Can identify tempo changes less than 15 BPM.
Excellent

Repeating Rhythms (Clapping)

How well does the student clap back rhythms while maintaining a steady and consistent foot tap?

Poor

Student already presented difficulty externalizing the tempo. Does not display enough dexterity and coordination to clap back rhythms. Even the simplest of rhythms are difficult.
Decent

Student is not coordinated enough to maintain a steady beat and cannot simultaneously clap back rhythms. Has very weak timing. Can barely cap back simple rhythms.
Fair

Student is able to clap the rhythms fairly well, but at the cost of keeping a steady foot tap. Timing is fair. Has difficulty clapping back some more difficult rhythms.
Good

Student is able to keep a steady beat while maintaining a steady foot tap. Student may miss a few rhythms, but remain on beat with the metronome and recover. Timing is good and is able to clap back most rhythms, with the exception of the most difficult ones.
Excellent

Student displays impeccable timing and is able to clap a wide variety of rhythms with ease. Timing is very strong. Student was able to clap back all rhythms without a second thought.
Repeating Rhythms (Counting)

How well does the student count back rhythms while maintaining a steady and consistent foot tap?

Poor

Student already presented difficulty externalizing the tempo. Does not display enough mental focus to repeat the rhythmic syllables. Even the simplest of rhythms are difficult.
Decent

Student is not coordinated enough to maintain a steady beat and cannot simultaneously count back rhythms. Has very weak timing. Also cannot repeat the correct rhythmic syllables.
Fair

Student is able to count the rhythms fairly well, but at the cost of keeping a steady foot tap. Timing is fair. Sometimes misses a few rhythmic syllables.
Good

Student is able to keep a steady beat while maintaining a steady foot tap. Student may miss a few rhythmic syllables, but remain on beat with the metronome and recover. Timing is good and is able to count back most rhythms, with the exception of the most difficult ones.
Excellent

Student displays impeccable timing and mental focus. Student is able to count a wide variety of rhythms with ease. There is no confusion on the rhythmic syllables. Timing is very strong. Student can count back all rhythms even those containing 16th notes, upbeats and dotted quarter notes.

Decent

Student's natural grip is still very weak, but displays some potential in their dominant hand; still no consistencies between hands.
Fair

Student grip stick with a full fist and may choke up on the stick, but has some consistencies between the hands. Fulcrum is not intact.
Good

Student is close to correct matched grip. Thumbs may be out of place, nonetheless, the fulcrum is somewhat visible. Hands may not be flat. Student may display close to a natural playing position.
Excellent

Student displays natural matched grip. The fulcrum is either intact or close to intact. Hands may not necessarily be flat. Does not choke up on the sticks. Displays a correct and very natural playing position. Student may have had some previous teaching by a teacher or older sibling.
