VILLAIN Speech Rubric 
Beginner Speech: Five to six minutes Common Core Standard: Presentation of Knowledge and Ideas. Adapt speech to a variety of contexts and tasks demonstrating command of formal English when indicated or appropriate. This is the first in a series of speeches. This speech focuses on presentation basics such as posture, volume, clarity, content and preparedness.

Always (95-100% of the time) speaks in complete sentences. Less that three grammar mistakes are made, and the student uses mature, effective vocabulary.

Meets

Speaks clearly and distinctly most (80 - 95% of the time) but mispronounces a few words. Rate of delivery is good. Used ums, ands, and likes at least 3 - 7 times.
Exceeds

Speaks clearly and distinctly all the time (100 - 95% of the time) and mispronounces no words. Uses proper expression that created an engaging audience. Avoided the use of ums, ands, and likes.
Poise and Eye Contact

Emergent

Slouches and unsure of what to do with the hands. Made no eye contact with the audience.
Approaching

Sometimes stands up straight. Made an attempt to show the items to the audience.There were moments of eye contact with the audience.
Meets

Student has good posture and uses proper hand gestures. Maintained good eye contact with the audience.
Exceeds

Student integrated posture, gestures, and effectively used engaging eye contact during the entire presentation.

Only one objective is out of order or completely forgotten. Central idea is presented with a lot of details. Most of the steps are presented by memory.
Exceeds

Each objective is stated in perfect order. Follows everything logically; maintains perfect unity, and offers many details that clearly identifies the finished product. Did not need any notes.
Conclusion

Emergent

There is no conclusion that reveals the "real" ending. Student does not look for sympathy or pleads their case.
Approaching

Student tries to tell their side of the story, but does little to plead their case.
Meets

Conclusion is effective. The "real" story is given and student does plead their case to the audience.
Exceeds

A wonderful conclusion to the villain speech. Persuasive language is strong. Audience would definitely agree with the villain's side of the story.
Visual Aids

No materials provided as a visual aid.
Approaching

Some materials present for speech. Shows some evidence of using the props in practice, but did not address its relevance.
Meets

Great props were present for speech. Materials were neat and organized. Student dressed for the occasion and used either objects, a pleasing to the eye poster, or a detailed power point.
Exceeds

Use of props was effectively used and they were relevant. Props helped to enhance the presentation and audience members enjoyed this aspect of the speech.
