General Requirements

Did the student use watercolors while filling the entire picture plane?

Advanced

The student created a landscape painting using watercolors and extended the landscape scene outside of the picture plane.
Proficient

The student created a landscape painting using watercolors and filled the entire 8 1/2 x 11 picture plane.
Basic

The student created a landscape painting which fills most of the 8 1/2 x 11 picture plane. Watercolors were used but in some areas the pencil drawing is still noticeable underneath.
Below Basic

The student did not fill the 8 1/2 x 11 picture plane. The landscape is drawn with pencil and little or no watercolor is present within the drawing.
Accuracy of Landscape

Did the student create a foreground, middle ground, and background within their painting? Did the student include a creek in the foreground with other natural elements in the background?

Advanced

The landscape is clearly drawn with a foreground, middle ground and background. Detail has also been given to item scale with large objects in the front and smaller objects in the back. A creek is present within the drawing and has the appearance of moving towards the foreground.
Proficient

The landscape is clearly drawn with a foreground, middle ground and background. A creek is present within the drawing as are other natural elements in the background.
Basic

The landscape is drawn with a foreground and background but no middle ground is visible. A creek is present within the drawing but does not have the appearance of moving towards the foreground. Some natural elements are included in the background but they are not drawn or painted according to scale.
Below Basic

The landscape is drawn with only one level (the landscape only includes one of the following: a foreground, middle ground or background). A creek is not present within the drawing.
Watercolors

Did the student use various watercolor techniques within their painting such as washes in the background and more detailed application in the foreground? Were colors applied consistently and evenly?

Advanced

Watercolors were applied in a neat and creative manner. Colors were evenly and consistently applied (there are no "blotchy" dark or light areas). Washes and neutral colors were used in the background. Brighter colors were used with more detail in the foreground.
Proficient

The application of the watercolor is fairly neat and creative, however, there may be a few areas that need some work (some colors may need to be more evenly and/or consistently applied). The student used washes in the background and attempted to add detail to the foreground.
Basic

The application of the watercolor is not very neat or creative. Many areas are lacking and/or incomplete. The student used only washes throughout the entire piece.
Below Basic

The application of the watercolor was not done in a neat or creative manner. The watercolor looks sloppy, as though no effort was put into the project.
Review and Reflection

The student is able to point out each area within their piece and how they created a sense of depth. The student completed a written response in which they discuss historical views of landscape paintings in light of current ecological concerns.

Advanced

The student can point to the foreground, middle ground, and background within their painting while also discussing the techniques they used to create those areas. They can discuss historical and contemporary views of landscape paintings. The student completed the written response and was able to discuss how current ecological concerns may affect a viewers experience of a landscape painting.
Proficient

The student can point to the foreground, middle ground, and background within their painting. The student can discuss historical and contemporary views of landscape paintings. The student completed the written response and made some connections between landscape paintings and current issues.
Basic

The student can point out the foreground and background but not middle ground is present within their painting. The student is able to recall some historical information regarding landscape paintings. The student completes the written response but is unable to make connections to contemporary art or current issues.
Below Basic

The student cannot point to the foreground, middle ground, and background within their piece because only one level is present. The student did not complete a written response and is unable to discuss historical or current issues that affect our understanding of landscape painting.
