Story Elements	Excellent Writer utilizes at least 6 types of nonfiction writing elements: Table of Contents, Information (what is/all about), Diagram, How to, Different Kinds paper, and Comparing.	Good Writer utilizes at least 5 types of nonfiction writing elements: Table of Contents, Information (what is/all about), Diagram, How to, Different Kinds paper, and Comparing.	Developing Writer utilizes at least 4 types of nonfiction writing elements: Table of Contents, Information (what is/all about), Diagram, How to, Different Kinds paper, and Comparing.	Needs Improvement Writer utilizes at least 2 types of nonfiction writing elements: Table of Contents, Information (what is/all about), Diagram, How to, Different Kinds paper, and Comparing.
Organization	Excellent Writer follows the outline presented in table of contents. All the information relates to the all about subject they are writing about. Writer stays on topic.	Good Writer mostly follows outline presented in table of contents. May have one section that is not listed in the table of contents. Writer stays on topic.	Developing Writer has a table of contents, but chapters are not connected. May be lapses in meaning because writer struggles to stay on topic.	Needs Improvement Writer does not have a clear plan for writing. Chapters are not clearly related to one another.
Conventions	Excellent Few spelling mistakes - readers are able to decode misspelled words easily. Writer uses punctuation consistently in the story.	Good Some spelling mistakes - readers may need reread sections to figure out misspelled words. Punctuation is present in most areas of the story.	Developing Writer uses mostly invented spelling.
