Main Idea/Topic Sentence	Excellent Main idea/ topic sentence is correctly placed and a clear statement of the paragraph.	Good Topic sentence/main idea is not correctly placed or not a clear statement of the paragraph.	Fair Topic sentence/main idea is not correctly placed and not a clear statement of the paragraph.	Poor Topic sentence/main idea is not present in the paragraph.
Supporting Detail Sentences	Excellent Paragraph has three or more supporting detail sentences that relate back to the main idea.	Good Paragraph has at least two supporting detail sentences that relate back to the main idea.	Fair Paragraph has at least one supporting detail sentence that relates back to the main idea.	Poor Paragraph has no supporting detail sentences relating back to the main idea.
Language	Excellent Uses vocabulary that is precise for the topic.	Good Uses vocabulary that is appropriate for the topic.	Fair Uses basic vocabulary for the topic.	Poor Uses vocabulary that is unsuitable for the topic.
Format	Excellent Follows accepted standard formatting and is the requested length.	Good Follows most accepted formatting guidelines and is the appropriate length.	Fair Does not follow standard formatting guidelines and is under requested length.	Poor Does not follow standard formatting guidelines and is significantly under requested length.
Conventions	Excellent Writing evidences understanding of proper grammar and use of punctuation throughout.	Good Writing contains one or two consistent grammatical errors or incorrect uses of punctuation.	Fair Many sentences are characterized by grammatical errors or incorrect uses of punctuation.	Poor Writing does not use proper grammar or punctuation and contains numerous errors.
Spelling	Excellent All words are spelled correctly.	Good Most words are spelled correctly.	Fair There are numerous spelling errors.	Poor The number of spelling errors significantly distracts from the readability of the piece.
