The definition is well crafted and challenges the reader to delve into their preconceptions of how the issue or word is defined.
The argument avoids slipping into an argument about value.
The definition is revelatory and narrowly focused.
Good B

The definition is thoughtfully crafted and shows evidence of good planning. Very few logical fallacies. The definition is revelatory but not narrowly focused.
Fair C

There is a definition, but it is predictable and does not push the reader toward critical thinking. Shows some fallacies in logic. The definition is not revelatory.
Poor D

There is no recognizable definition or it is so weak that it is not compelling. Significant logical fallacies.
Organization

Excellent A+

The introduction hooks attention. Body supports and proves the definition. The analysis is effective and well thought out and the argument focuses on the definition.
Good B

The essay contains all the essential elements of a strong introduction, textual support in the body, and a conclusion.
