Participation Days

Novice

The student is absent more than present.
Basic

The student is absent on a regular basis.
Proficient

The student is absent occasionally.
Advanced

The student has perfect or near-perfect attendance.
Practice Habits

Novice

The student spends ZERO time on the instrument outside of class.
Basic

The student practices minimally, which contributes directly to the student's low performance level.
Proficient

The student practices sporadically, allowing the student to keep up, but definitely not lead.
Advanced

The student practices regularly which results into this particular student being a solid leader.
Stick Grip/Playing Position

Novice

There is demonstration of poor stick/mallet grip and/or correct playing position/stance.
Basic

Proper stick/mallet grips and playing position/stance are attempted but not consistent. The student does adjust and fix with teacher assistance.
Proficient

Proper stick/mallet grips and playing position/stance are demonstrated but still need strength building endurance.
Advanced

Excellent stick/mallet grip and position/stance supports all concepts of a successful performer (precise s/m grip provides ease of execution with speed; correct positioning of the body/ arms/hands to all parts of the instrument allow execution freedom).
Rhythm (Sense of time)

Novice

A clear lack of a steady tempo is demonstrated. As a result, the student is unable to interpret/ execute rhythms accurately.
Basic

Student is able to perform with a steady beat a portion of the time with teacher direction. Rhythms are attempted but are still inaccurate.
Proficient

A solid tempo is exhibited and most rhythms are executed correctly. Student is able to fix some rhythms without teacher intervention/direction.
Advanced

All rhythms are steady and correctly executed; a consistent tempo is maintained.
Rudiments

Novice

The student does not understand the concept of rudiments.
Basic

The student understands the concept of rudiments but fails to incorporate consistently (continue to write sticking in the music).
Proficient

Rudiments are recognized, understood and executed with confidence (no need to write sticking in music).
Advanced

Rudiments are recognized, understood and executed with ease and are incorporated within the music without assistance.
Technique

Novice

Improper/poor stick/ mallet grip and/or improper/poor position/stance contribute to the inaccuracy of note execution on both instruments (snare & bells).
Basic

Some techniques are correct and the student is able to correct one or more aspects with teacher direction. Stick/mallet grip and position/stance are positively recognized.
Proficient

Most techniques are executed correctly, and student is able to fix errors without teacher intervention. Fundamental sticking application is incorporated (right hand lead) along with good posture and playing position.
Advanced

Excellent positioning and sticking contribute to successful note execution. The student's execution of a musical line is flawlessly demonstrated by use of proper fundamental sticking patterns (rudiments).
Note Recognition (Pitch - BELLS)

Novice

The student is not able to identify notes in the music staff (treble clef). Even with labels on the music, the student does not know the instrument well enough to maneuver around.
Basic

The student can visually identify notes in the staff, but is slow to match the note in the staff to the note on the instrument (the student labels some of the notes).
Proficient

The student is able to play the correct notes with the correct sticking in tempo, but will still need to be reminded of additional musical markings in the music (dynamics, articulation markings, tempo changes, etc.).
Advanced

The student performs keyboard percussion music with excellent sticking, positioning, and is capable of applying additional written musical aspects (dynamics, articulations, tempo changes, etc.) with no prompts.
Musical Terms/Symbol Recognition

Novice

The student is so captivated by trying to play the right notes at the right time that no other terms or symbols are even noticed/observed.
Basic

Terms and symbols are noticed and somewhat attempted but are not controlled nor accurately executed. Improvement occurs with teacher guidance.
Proficient

Terms and symbols are attempted but are not developed. Improvement occurs with teacher guidance.
Advanced

Excellent and accurate demonstration of execution/interpretation of all terms and symbols incorporated in the music are confidently performed by the musician.
