Clearly focused: effectively establishes a setting and describes the people in the story.
Good

Adequately focused: adequately establishes a setting and describes the people in the story.
Average

Narrative is somewhat maintained and may have a minor drift in focus: inconsistently establishes a setting and describes the people in the story.
Poor

Narrative provides little or no focus: may be very brief, may have a major drift, and focus may be confusing or ambiguous.
Organization

Great

Very organized and sequential, uses transitions in writing, can follow the story easily and flows very smoothly. Effective opening and closure.
Good

Organized, uses some transitions in writing, is a little choppy and mostly easy to follow. Adequate opening and closure.
Average

Somewhat organized, uses little transition between paragraphs, is very rough and cannot follow the story easily. Opening and closure, if present, are weak.

Writer elaborates on details, includes dialogue, concrete words, and sensory language adequately throughout the story.
Average

Writer provides uneven elaboration and expression with dialogue and details. Partial use of sensory and concrete language.
Poor

Writer provides minimal elaboration providing few or no details, dialogue, or description. There is little use of language and has little sense of purpose.
Grammar/ Conventions

Great

Good variety in sentence structure ( write sentences of different lengths), correct punctuation, capitalization, and spelling, and an excellent use of word choice and variety. Three or less errors made.
Good

Good variety in sentence structure, few mistakes in punctuation, capitalization, or spelling, and has a great use of word choice and variety. Five or less errors made.
Average

Somewhat same sentence structure, some noticeable mistakes in punctuation, capitalization or spelling , and has a solid use of word choice and variety. Eight or more errors made.
Poor

Simple sentence structure, major mistakes in punctuation, capitalization or spelling that completely throws off the story, and has little or no variety in word choice. Ten or more frequent errors.
