First Grade Writng 2nd Quarter This rubric will be used to assess first grade writing in the second quarter of the school year.

Forms Letters Legibly How well did the student make use of the lines on the paper, form letters correctly and produce neat, quality work?	0 Does not make use of lines on the paper, form letters correctly and/or overall the work is not neat. The student did not work carefully.	1 Most of the time makes use of lines on the paper, forms letters correctly and/or overall the work is mostly neat. There is room for some improvement but the work is overall acceptable.	2 Always makes use of the lines on the paper, forms letters correctly and the work is very neat.
Applies Mechanics of Writing How well did students apply the mechanics of writing in their work (capitalization, punctuation, spaces and complete sentences)?	0 Does not use any mechanics of writing in the work.	1 Most of the time uses mechanics of writing appropriately. May need some corrections but a general understanding of the mechanics is demonstrated.	2 Always uses capitalization, punctuation, spaces and complete sentences when writing.
Stays on Topic How well did the student develop main idea and consider the audience and purpose when writing two sentences or more?	0 Does not stay on topic in the work.	1 Most of the time stays on topic. Needs some direction but demonstrates an adequate understanding of main idea, purpose and audience.	2 Always stays on topic.
Uses Appropriate Spelling How well did the student use his/her knowledge of known sight words or make readable, phonetically acceptable attempts at unknown words when writing?	0 Does not correctly spell known sight words and/ or makes unreadable, phonetically unclear attempts at spelling. Errors interfere with meaning.	1 Most sight words are spelled correctly. Attempts at unknown words are readable, but may have some vowels, beginning sounds and/ or ending sounds that are incorrect. Errors do not interfere with meaning.	2 All sight words are spelled correctly. Unfamiliar words are readable and phonetically correct. Only the occasional vowel is incorrect. Meaning is clear.
