Formal essay structure

Excellent

The judgment of the movie or television show should be your thesis, which you include in your introduction. The body of your paper will explain your thesis and support it. You should restate your thesis in the conclusion. Frequently movie reviewers tie their judgment to an exhortation to the reader.
Good

Some part of the formal essay structure is missing, or has not been created successfully. Consequently, the paper does not come together as a whole.
Needs Improvement

The formal essay structure is not present. Therefore, the paper stalls.
Review criteria

Excellent

The writer explains the success or failure of the show based upon the typical categories that reviewers use and applies those categories to the subject successfully.
Good

The writer does not tie the judgment to the evaluation. The writer does not offer reasons to support the evaluation of the show, or does not develop those reasons.
Needs Improvement

The review is not convincing. Several of the criteria are absent.
Outside critics/citation

Excellent

You should include either quotations or paraphrases from two other movie critics. You may include critics who either agree or disagree with you.You should mention the critics by name in your text. At the end of the paper, you should cite the critics you use in a Works Cited section.
Good

You do not include both critics, or you do not incorporate them into your text. You may have not cited your sources at the end of your paper.
Needs Improvement

You have failed to include several aspects of this requirement.
Discussion of genre

Excellent

You will also include comparisons between your subject and four other movies or television shows that belong to the same genre. These comparisons should demonstrate how your subject includes or deviates from the characteristics of the genre. These four comparisons will help you explain the popularity of failure of your subject.
Good

You do not include four comparisons between your subject and other examples of the genre. You do not develop the comparisons successfully by incorporating detail and example.
Needs Improvement

You have not situated your subject within the genre.
Expression

Excellent

The writer creates paragraphs and sentences that clearly convey the ideas. The writer includes vocabulary that is appropriate to the topic. There are almost no mistakes in grammar, spelling, punctuation, or word choice. The paper demonstrates college level English.
Good

Persistant mistakes in grammar make this paper difficult to read. The word choice may be incorrect or not well suited to the subject.
Needs Improvement

The paper does not attain the standard of college level English for many reasons.
