Journal Entry Criteria 
The students are required to follow current events. Every Monday, they will be responding to one of multiple topics from the news in a journal entry. Each entry is worth 15 points. Student is NOT being graded on the opinion expressed.

Student demonstrates awareness of the event being discussed

Poor

Student does not write a full journal entry.
Student shows no awareness of the event being discussed in the entry. This is demonstrated by repetition of details supplied by prompt, and/or incorrect information being added.
Fair

Student shows some awareness of the event being discussed, demonstrated by the addition of details not supplied in the prompt. The student does not connect the details to the opinion expressed in the entry.
Good

Student shows full awareness of the event being discussed, demonstrated by details added to support an opinion. Student writes a coherent entry, with an introduction, good supports, and a conclusion based on the supports.
Development

Student is able to support his/her opinion with details from the event or background of the event.

Poor

Student does not support opinion with details based on knowledge of the event. Student does not demonstrate a unique opinion about the event or topic.
Fair

Student shows some ability to support his/her opinion with details of the event. Student does not support his/her opinion strongly; he/she supports both sides of the topic, or changes opinion in the middle of the paragraph.
Good

Student writes a well supported paragraph. Student uses knowledge of details of the event to inform and support his/her opinion.
Mechanics

Student demonstrates awareness of the conventions of written communication.

Poor

Student shows no skill in conventions of written communication. Student does not write a correct paragraph (introduction, supports, conclusion), does not use correct grammar, spelling, or other mechanics of writing.
Fair

Student demonstrates some skill in the conventions of written communication. Student writes a mostly correct paragraph, with errors. Student shows a struggle with written communication.
Good

Student shows appropriate skill in conventions of written communication. Student writes a correct paragraph, showing awareness of mechanics (spelling, grammar, etc), as well as paragraph structure (introduction, supports, and conclusion.)
