ESP 515 Article Critique Rubric 
With this assignment, the students need to evaluate one article from a professional journal. The critique should be approximately 2-3 pages long (not including a cover page or the attached article). The other sources can be from any journals, and your text MUST be one of your cited sources. Newspapers and web sites are not acceptable. This critique should be written according to APA formatting guidelines. Further specifics on what is required can be found in the syllabus.

Student meets full requirements of at least a 2pg paper. APA formatting is done well, with minor errors found. Article is attached. Reference page and title page are attached with minor errors in formatting. Student displays two or less grammatical mechanics errors. Demosntrates writing skills expected for under graduate study.
Approaching Standard (2)

Paper is less than the required page length, moderate APA formatting errors are found. Article, Reference page, and title page are attached with moderate errors in formatting. Moderate errors are found in grammar and writing skills. Student generally struggles to properly structure the paper in a way that allows for consistent flow of thought.
Does Not Meet Standard (1)

Paper is less than the required page length, significant errors in APA formatting. Article, reference page, and/or title page are missing or have significant formatting errors. Writing mechanics, word usage, grammar and spelling contain many errors that do effect the paper's content.
Content (35pts)

Introduces and fully explores topic, summarizes article, relates article to text and class discussion

Student provides main ideas and facts from article and uses information learned from in-class slides and text readings to facilitate his/her own understanding of the material in the article.<BR>
Student’s discussion reveals that he/she can take knowledge gained from teachings to be able to achieve greater understanding of more professional but related material.
Meets Standard (3)

All main ideas and facts from the article are included. Well-written and concise summary is provided in objective view and referencing to the article is provided. Author and source are named. Text is cited and comparisons/contrasts are made between article and text.
Approaching Standard (2)

Some support details from article are missing. Summary is not objective OR minimal referencing to the article is provided. Authors OR sources need to be cited more. Text or class discussion is mentioned, but citation is not properly formatted
Does Not Meet Standard (1)

No summary is provided OR a closely verbatim of the text. Authors and sources not cited, no reference made to class discussion or text.
Conclusion (5pts)

Explores one's own thoughts and ideas regarding the topic, and summarizes paper appropriately

Exceed Standard (4)

Conclusion effectively wraps up and goes beyond restating the content of the paper. Conclusion is clear and concise. Student reflects the major theme/topic and provides the significance of the topic to their action research.
Meets Standard (3)

Student effectively summarizes the content of the paper in a clear and concise way. Student reflects the major theme/topic and provides the significance of the topic in relation to their action research.
Approaching Standard (2)

Conclusion is recognizable and ties up almost all loose ends. Student mentions some topics that are associated with the article, and loosely relates the topic to their action research.
Does Not Meet Standard (1)

Conclusion does not summarize main points. Conclusion is vague or unclear, and no connection is made between the topic and their action research.
