Poor
The central idea is not clearly stated, is vague or uses figurative language. The introduction does not grab the listeners attention.
Fair
The central idea is expressed in a complete sentence instead of a question. The speaker grabs the attention of the audience.
Good
The central idea is clearly stated and encapsulates the main points of the speech thoroughly. The speaker uses a story, quote, question or shocking statement to effectively capture the listeners attention.
Vocalics and Interest
Poor
The speaker fails to utilize vocal variations and has poor volume. Rate is either too slow or too rapid. Speaker fails to captivate the audience. Limited use of vocabulary.
Fair
The speaker has good volume and/or lacks in vocal variation. The rate is average. The audience is only marginally engaged. Variety of word meanings.
Good
The speaker has good volume and projection and vocal variation. The speaker talks at an understandable and steady rate of speed. Audience is captivated throughout the speech. Effective use of language and vocabulary.
Content and Transitions
Poor
The speaker fails to address the prompt and/or supplies very minimal details to elaborate on topic. Lacks effective transitions and signpost language throughout the speech
Fair
The speaker addresses the prompt and provides limited supporting details. Details may be redundant or off-topic. Uses repetitive sign post language and transitions.
Good
The speaker demonstrates understanding of the prompt and provides solid supporting details. Effective use of sign post language and chronologically delivers points.
Organization/ Grammar
Poor
The speaker has frequent pauses, "um"s, and/or "like"s in speech. Speech is unorganised. Makes frequent usage mistakes. The speaker uses incorrect subject-verb agreement and pronunciation is not clear.
Fair
The speech flows smoothly and in logical progression with few pauses and/or thinking words. Uses correct sentence structure, grammar, enunciation and pronunciation.
Good
The speaker delivers speech without pauses. The speech content is well organised in logical order. The speaker uses exceptional grammar including subject-verb agreement, pronunciation and verb tense.
