Singing Skills Assessment 
The following rubric is a checklist for current singing skills. During class, youth participated in singing songs from workshop repertoire. Participants are expected to sing with pitch and rhythmic accuracy, good projection, clear articulation, proper tone quality and creative expression.

Pitch

Excellent

All pitches are correct. Starting point is always on pitch and clear. Singing matches throughout the whole melody in the low and high parts and stays in key.
Satisfactory

The vocal line follows the melodic contour, but there are few off pitch parts, sometimes too high or too low. Needs work on the starting pitch for each part to match the pitch in the appropriate key
Needs Improvement

Singing doesn't match the melody, but there are few vocal parts on pitch. Needs work on melodic contour. Needs to listen to the melody and follow the contour of it to match the pitch.
Very Poor

Pitches are not clear. It sounds similar to speaking. Monotone. Needs work on developing singing voice. Should listen to voices more attentively and identify if the pitches move up, down or stay the same.
Rhythm

Excellent

All rhythms were properly on the beat and of proper length.
Satisfactory

Most of the rhythms were on the beat and proper length, but there were a few long or short sounds. Now I am working on being more accurate with length of the rhythms, making sure that each rhythm get proper amount of beats.
Needs Improvement

Most of the rhythms were on the beat and proper length. Should work on being more accurate with the beat. Sing or say the words while tapping the beat steadily.

Rhythm is not clear. Needs work on identifying the beats and the rhythms. Should listen to the song and tap the beat and clap the rhythms.
Projection

Excellent

Mouth is opened wide, and voice projected with confidence.
Satisfactory

Mouth is opened, but voice is projected in some parts. Should work to project my voice throughout the whole song.
Needs Improvement

Voice is not projected, but mouth is sometimes opened. Should practice opening mouth for singing by dropping my jaw and producing a "bigger" sound.
Very Poor

Mouth isn't opened , and voice isn't projected. Should work to open mouth by dropping my jaw.
Lyrics/Articulation

Excellent

All the words are clear and lyrics are easy to understand.
Satisfactory

The lyrics are understandable, but there are one or few words that are not clear. Now I am working on the words that weren't clear enough. I am singing words with accurate diction and clear sounds.
Needs Improvement

The words are not clear, but one or few parts are understandable. Should rehearse the parts of the lyrics by saying it with accurate diction and clear sounds.
Very Poor

The words are not clear. Should rehearse each word by saying it in different tempos with accurate diction.
Tone quality

Excellent

Voice has a pleasing and beautiful tone. It sounds natural and free.
Satisfactory

Most of the time voice sounds natural and free, one or few parts when voice was too harsh, nasal or breathy. Should work to control tone in high and/or low registers.
Needs Improvement

Most of the time voice sounds were harsh, nasal, or breathy, but there were a few naturally pleasing sounds. Should work to produce a safe, natural sound in all registers.
Very Poor

Voice was not naturally pleasing. Tone was either too harsh, nasal or breathy. Needs work to control voice while singing. Should practice producing sounds without pushing, forcing, yelling or humming.
Posture/Expression

Excellent

Posture was naturally maintained with balanced feet on the floor, hands on sides, relaxed shoulders and head. All gestures are aligned with the lyrics of the song to help express the mood of the music.
Satisfactory

Posture was naturally maintained with balanced feet on the floor, hands on sides, relaxed shoulders and head, but there were one or few gestures that are not aligned with the lyrics of the song or they distracted listeners . Needs work finding the appropriate moves or gestures for the entire song to help express the mood of the song.
Needs Improvement

Posture wasn't naturally maintained with balanced feet on the floor, hands on sides, relaxed shoulders and head. Some good gestures aligned with the lyrics of the song and helped to express the mood of the music. Needs work maintaining posture while singing.
Very Poor

A posture wasn't naturally maintained with balanced feet on the floor, hands on sides, relaxed shoulders and head and gestures were not appropriate and they distracted listeners. Needs much work to balance posture and control body movements while singing.
