Purpose and Originality	Master Writer Poem is creative and original. It is evident that the poet put thought into their words and innovatively conveyed their ideas and emotions.	Competent Writer Poem is thoughtful and creative. A couple of phrases or ideas may be revisited, but the overall product is carefully written.	Developing Writer The poem is creative, but appears to be rushed.	Beginning Writer Poem appears to be thoughtless or rushed. Work is very repetitive and ideas are impersonal or unoriginal.
Grammar	Master Writer Proper use of modern English spelling and grammar is employed consistently throughout the poem.	Competent Writer A couple of spelling or grammar mistakes are evident, but do not diminish the meaning of the poem.	Developing Writer The poet's intended meaning is muddled by several spelling or grammar errors.	Beginning Writer There are numerous spelling or grammar errors, making the poem difficult to understand.
Presentation Students are expected to write legibly.	Master Writer The cursive is extremely neat and no erasures.	Competent Writer The cursive is neat but may contain some erasures.	Developing Writer The cursive is somewhat messy and some words illegible.	Beginning Writer The cursive is messy and mostly illegible.
