This play preparation and performance rubric is an evaluative tool for both a teacher assessment and a student self-assessment which reflects class play preparation and performance.

A. Preparation

Students will demonstrate preparation and effective use of class time for play rehearsal.

Level 4

Student is ready immediately with no prompts needed. Constantly works hard and stays on task during rehearsal and prep time. Most lines memorized by end of first week, with only a couple of line mistakes which s/he corrected immediately.
Level 3

Well- rehearsed. Usually works hard and stays on task during rehearsal and prep time. Several line mistakes, but off book. Most lines memorized by end of first week, with two to four line mistakes which s/he corrected immediately.
Level 2

Inconsistently works hard and rarely stays on task during rehearsal and prep time. Several line mistakes, but off book. Most lines memorized by end of second week, with five to eight line mistakes which s/he corrected immediately.
Level 1

Student uses script to get through scene. Student demonstrates little evidence of memorization preparation and does not stay on task during rehearsal.
B. Voice

Students will demonstrate effective variations of rhythm, speed, volume and pitch.

Level 4

Student's diction is always clear and audible. His/her voice varies in rate, volume, pitch successfully matching the character's personality and emotions. Student is loud enough to be heard at the back of the auditorium.
Level 3

Student's diction is usually clear and audible. His/her voice varies in rate, volume, and pitch to match the character's personality and emotions. Student is not loud enough all of the time.
Level 2

Student's diction is sometimes muddy and soft. Sometimes His/her voice varies in rate, volume, and pitch to match the character's personality and emotions. Student is rarely loud enough.
Level 1

Student's diction is muddy and soft. His/her voice does not explore the variations of rate, volume, and pitch to match the character's personality and emotions.
C. Physical Characterization

Students will express ideas and feelings through movement.

Level 4

The student has stepped into the role of his/her character, and is consistently believable, natural, unique, energetic and reactive. The character's energy has an evident center. Blocking is smooth and fluid thought-out.
Level 3

The student has stepped into the role of his/her character, and is usually believable, natural, energetic and reactive. The character's energy has an evident center. Blocking is smooth.
Level 2

The student has not fully stepped into the role of his/her character, and is believable, natural, energetic and reactive less than half of the time. Blocking is choppy and lacks fluidity.
Level 1

The student has not stepped into the role of his/her character.
D. Interpretation

Students will effectively interpret characters using voice and body expressively and creates dramatizations that are believable and reveal character motivation.

Level 4

Student is believable, natural, and unique. Character objectives are clear and thought out. Commits to all strong and active choices. Proper emotional tone used. Little to no character breaks.
Level 3

Student is believable, natural. Character objectives are muddy, but active. Commits to some choices. Proper emotional tone used at times. A few character breaks.
Level 2

Student is inconsistently believable and makes weak choices. The student's objectives are unclear, and inactive. Proper emotional tone at times. Many character breaks.
Level 1

Student is not believable. Makes no effort to commit to a choice. No character created.
Memorization

Students knows their lines and has them memorized. (Refers to the goal set for memorization each week.)

Level 4

Student knows all of their lines.
Level 3

Student knows most of their lines.
Level 2

Student knows some of their lines.
Level 1

Student knows few of their lines.
