Structure 20 pts (grammar, spelling, organization)	Poor The essay has no structure, there are more than 10 grammatical/spelling errors, and it is very hard to follow the thoughts and ideas of the author.	Fair The essay has an unclear structure, there are 10 or less grammatical/spelling errors, and requires more than one reading to understand and follow the thoughts and ideas of the author.	Good The essay has a notable structure, there are 8 or less grammatical/spelling errors, the thoughts and ideas of the author can be understood and followed easily	Excellent The essay has a clear and cohesive structure (opening, body, closing), there are 5 or less grammatical/spelling errors, the writing style conveys meaning effortlessly and beautifully
Musical Content 20 pts (Applying the musical elements in the analysis : melody, rhythm, instrumentation, texture, structure)	Poor The analysis includes only one of the musical elements, the student shows confusion in his/her understanding of the musical term	Fair The analysis includes two of the elements, the student seems to understand the terms but there are many errors in the application of the musical terms.	Good The analysis includes three to four of the elements, student shows clear understanding of the terms and is able to apply them correctly .	Excellent The analysis includes all of the elements, student shows clear understanding of the terms and the analysis enable the reader to have a clear audio image of the piece without listening to it.
Personal point of View 20 pts Why do you like this piece?	Poor There is no reflection on why the author likes this particular piece .	Fair The essay includes a one-sentence statement on why the author likes the piece but the author does not reflect on how the piece is meaningful musically or personally.	Good The essay includes a reflection on how the piece is meaningful personally to the author.	Excellent The essay includes a deep reflection on author's preference for this piece. The author comments on both the musical aesthetics and personal meaning of the piece.
