Cotton in the South
Tobacco was the South's first major cash crop. When Eli Whitney perfected the cotton gin in 1793 cotton became King. A farmer needed only land and labor (slaves) to raise a cotton crop. By 1800 cotton accounted for more than half of all U.S. exports.
