Story events What, Who, When, Why, Where, How	Minimal The student did not describe enough of the important events from the story to retell or summarize the story.	Partial The student told some of the story but did not include the most important events.	Adequate The student summarized the story using the most important events.	Exemplary The student summarized the story using the most important events and included supporting details.
Sequence 1st, 2nd, Next, Then, Afterwards, Finally	Minimal The student did not put the events into a logical order. The story did not make sense.	Partial Some of the events are in the correct order. It was a little difficult to understand the story.	Adequate The story was retold in sequential order. It was easy to understand the story.	Exemplary The student retold the story in sequential order using a variety of temporal words.
Mechanics Sentence structure and grammar	Minimal The student exhibited numerous spelling, capitalization, punctuation, and/or grammar errors.
