Excellent
The structure of the writing makes it enjoyable to read. There is a compelling and engaging introduction, the body flows and the conclusion makes the reader think.
Good
The writing has a clear, detailed beginning, middle and end that flow together and move the story along.
Fair
Some evidence of organization but one or more sections: beginning, middle or end are weak.
Poor
The writing lacks organization.
Word Choice
Excellent
The words used are vivid and specific. Powerful use of verbs, adjectives and topic words are evident and used accurately.
Good
Has some vivid word choices and generally good language. Some parts could use more expressive words.
Fair
The words used are acceptable but ordinary or sounds like the author is trying too hard to impress. Some words my be used incorrectly.
Poor
Word choice is weak, too many common words, many words may be used incorrectly.
Sentence Fluency
Excellent
Sentences are clear and flow well. They begin in different ways and express complex thoughts. Paper is a delight to read out loud.
Good
Sentences are mostly well-constructed, varied, flow well with only some minor errors that do not confuse meaning.
Fair
Writing has more problems with sentence structure and does not flow well. Some errors may confuse meaning.
Poor
Sentences are often awkward or mechanical; little variety in length; has many errors in sentence structure that often confuse the meaning.
Conventions and Editing

The story has almost no errors in spelling, grammar, or punctuation.
Good
The story has minor errors in punctuation, grammar, or spelling that do not distract the reader.
Fair
The errors in grammar, spelling and punctuation create some confusion and may distract the reader.
Poor
The story has so many errors in grammar, spelling and punctuation that confuse meaning and distract the reader.
