Mallet Hold
Exemplary
-almost always holds the mallets properly with fingers wrapped around and thumbs tucked (bicycle grip), palms facing down with hands holding the mallet in the correct place on the stick of the mallet.
Satisfactory
-usually holds mallets properly, sometimes holds loosely at the correct point on the stick, or fingers may not be wrapped around with thumbs tucked.
Developing
-sometimes uses proper technique for holding mallets, but slips into incorrect hold.
Showing Little Progress
-rarely uses proper technique; fingers and thumb are gripping the mallet incorrectly or too loosely; palms up; grip is on incorrect place on the mallet stick.
Striking the Instrument
Exemplary
-almost always strikes instrument in the middle of the bar, taps and pulls the sound out of the instrument rather than pounding the sound into the box. Mallets are kept close to the bar - movement is from the wrist, not the elbow.
Satisfactory
-often uses proper technique when striking the instrument. Taps and pulls the sound from the middle of the bar, but may have movement from the elbow at times instead of the wrist.
Developing
-sometimes uses proper technique when striking the instrument. Strikes the middle of the bar, but often pounds the sound and mallets are not very close to the bar.

-rarely uses proper technique when striking the instrument. Much arm movement, pounding or banging is occuring or student is playing on ends of the bars.

-almost always maintains the group pulse and plays with proper balance within the ensemble.

-usually maintains the group pulse and plays with proper balance within the ensemble.

-struggles to maintain the group pulse or plays too loudly or too softly within the ensemble.

-rarely maintains the group pulse or plays too loudly or softly within the ensemble. Frequently lost and off beat or careless with dynamics.
