Planning & Explanation	Exemplary Student can describe in detail at any point during the creation process how they envision the final product and how they intend to reach their goal. Very focused and goal-oriented.	Competent Student can somewhat describe at any point during the creation process how they envision the final product and how they intend to reach their goal. Focused and goal-oriented.	Emergent Student can describe how s/he envisions the final product but finds it difficult to describe how s/he will reach that goal. Has set a goal, but let's things evolve in somewhat random manner.	Beginner Student has thought very little about the project. Is present but is not invested in the product.
Drawing & Painting	Exemplary Visual is expressive and detailed. Student has great control and is able to experiment a little.	Competent Visual is expressive and somewhat detailed. Student has basics, but had not "branched" out.	Emergent Visual has few details. It is primarily representational. Student needs to improve control.	Beginner Visual lacks almost all detail OR it is unclear what the drawing is intended to be. Student needs to work on control.
Time/Effort	Exemplary Class time was used wisely. Much time and effort went into the planning of the composition of the artwork.	Competent Class time was used wisely. Student did enough effort into the planning of the composition of the artwork.	Emergent Class time was not always used wisely. Student did some additional effort.
