Capitalization/Punctuation	Score of Five Correct capitalization and punctuation guide the reader through the composition.	Score of 4 Capitalization and/or punctuation are basically correct, but not in trickier places.	Score of 3 Numerous errors in capitalization and/or punctuation.
Grammar	Score of Five The grammar and usage contribute to the clarity and style of the writing.	Score of 4 There are minor problems in grammar and/or usage --- a little more editing needed.	Score of 3 The composition does not appear to have been edited. Grammar and/or usage errors interfere with meaning.
Content	Score of Five The composition demonstrates much understanding of the novel and its characters. The continuation of the novel is effective. Rough draft shows much brainstorming and storyline development. Peer edit is completed and included.	Score of 4 The composition demonstrates some understanding of the novel and its characters. The continuation of the novel is sensible. Rough draft shows some brainstorming and storyline development. Peer edit is included.	Score of 3 The composition demonstrates little understanding of the novel and its characters. The continuation of the novel is lacking. Rough draft is not included or shows little evidence of brainstorming and storyline development. Peer edit was not completed
Fluency	Score of Five The sentences flow smoothly and the composition is easy to read.	Score of 4 The sentences do not flow as smoothly and/or the composition is not as easy to read as a "Score of Five."	Score of 3 The composition is not as "reader-friendly" as needed to communicate the ideas effectively.
Presentation	Score of Five The composition was completed and turned in on time. The writing is legible and the paper itself is neat.	Score of 4 Missing one of the criteria for a "Score of Five."	Score of 3 Missing two or more of the criteria for a "Score of Five."
