Basic Essay Rubric
	Poor 1 pts	Fair 5 pts	Good 10 pts
Completion	Poor Assignment is only partially complete.	Fair Assignment falls slightly short of completion.	Good Assignment fulfills length requirement.
Topic Sentences	Poor Essay begins immediately with writer's opinion. "I think..." "In my opinion..." Or the writer uses the words "it" as the subject or the word "because" in an intro sentence. [applies to all paragraphs]	Fair Writer uses an intro sentence but it lacks clarity. Do you understand what they are saying?	Good Writer uses an effective intro sentence that describes or introduces the topic at hand.
Surface Errors	Poor Several surface errors or other issues with neatness.	Fair One or two extra/missing spaces, typos or other issues with neatness	Good The essay is free of extra/missing spaces, typos
Word Choice	Poor Writer uses non-academic language or slang, examples: "nice" "good" "very" ""stuff" "gonna" "bogus" "ur" "u" "really ..." "Well,..." "So,..." etc.	Fair Writer uses academic language most of the time, but the tone or some words still appear non-academic	Good Writer effectively uses academic language and is successful at creating a mature, academic tone.
