The essay: Compares and contrasts items clearly. Points to specific examples to illustrate ideas. Includes only the information relevant to comparison & contrast. Clearly explain and analyze all details.
Level 3
The essay: Compares and contrasts but the supporting information is general. Includes information that may not be relevant. Many details given from both the text and time period. Explains & analyzes most details well.

The essay: compares and/or contrasts, using some details from both the text and time period. OR the essay only compares or only contrasts. OR includes details but little explanation given or analysis is not clear.

Essay does not fit the assignment.
Format
20 pts.
Level 4
Essay breaks the information with the introduction, similarities, differences, and conclusion structured into paragraphs. Essay has a strong thesis, transitions, & attention grabber.
Level 3
The essay has the required paragraphs but lacks: a strong thesis, transitions, or attention grabber.
Level 2
Thesis unclear. Paragraphs formatted unclearly. Few or no transitions.
Level 1
No thesis and no use of paragraphing (indentations, etc.)
Style
20 pts.
Level 4
Moves smoothly from one idea to the next. Uses high vocabulary & formal, clear language. Uses variety of structure.
Level 3
Essay moves from one idea to the next, but with little variety. Uses appropriate vocabulary but not high level. Uses formal language.
Level 2
Informal language throughout the essay. Vocabulary used is understandable but informal, conversational. Tone is overall not appropriate for a formal essay.
Level 1
Essay lacks a sense of style, and the tone/diction make understanding the essay difficult.
Conventions

Grammar, Usage, Mechanics, Spelling are nearly perfect throughout the essay (0-1 errors)
Level 3
Some errors in grammar, usage, mechanics, and spelling throughout the essay (2-6 errors)
Level 2
Many errors throughout the essay, but they do not interfere with meaning.
Level 1
So many errors through out the essay that it interferes with meaning.
