Writing a Children's Book 
Write a picture book for young children. Use language and include images appropriate for young readers. Your story should be at least fourteen pages long and should focus on a specific issue or conflict, theme. The theme should be visible with the characters and plot throughout the book.

The children's book is between 14 and 20 pages long and fits the length and text requirements. Contains the title, the author's name, and illustrations relate to the story.

Excellent Effort

The project meets the length requirement, the topic and purpose are very clear. Contains the title, the author's name, and cover illustrations relate to the story.
Average Effort

The project meets the length requirement, but the topic/purpose needs some clarity. Cover contains most of the required parts.
Below Average Effort

The project is less than 14 pages, there is confusion around the topic/purpose. Cover does not contain many of the required parts.
Poor Effort

The project has many inaccuracies and is less than 14 pages and lacks purpose or meaning. Cover contains very few of the required parts.
Illustrations

Students draw illustrations with color that are appropriate pictures to accompany the writing on the pages and support the plot with evidence of effort, time, and planning.

Excellent Effort

Illustrations with color and details are present and the plot is connected to all the written pages. Details are extreme and great care went into each picture. Evidence is abundant of effort, time, and planning put into the story illustrations.
Average Effort

Some illustrations with are placed correctly and connected to the written pages. Detail to enhance the story is present. Evidence is present of effort, time and planning put into the illustrations.
Below Average Effort

Illustrations are just placed on the page and are really not connected to the written page. Little evidence of effort, time and planning put into the illustrations. May or may not contain color.
Poor Effort

There are few to no illustrations. May or may not contain color.
Plot development/literary devices

All five areas of the plot are included and clearly developed throughout the story (exposition, rising action, climax, falling action, and resolution). The subject matter is age appropriate. At least one literary device is present.

Excellent Effort

The flow of the story contains all five areas of plot and are clearly developed throughout the story. At least one literary device is strongly present throughout the book.
Average Effort

The flow of the story is lacking one area of the plot and there are some unclear parts in the story. At least one literary device is simply resent in the book.
Below Average Effort

Story is hard to follow at times and more than one of the areas of the plot are missing. Story does not flow as it should.
A literary device is present, but incorrectly used.
Poor Effort

Story does not contain any of the areas of plot throughout the story. The story is unclear and does not flow as it should. No literary device is present.
Grammar

All proofreading skills are adapted within the writing. Spelling errors, run-ons and fragments are corrected.

Excellent Effort

There are 0-1 errors in grammar, spelling, and sentence formation.
Average Effort

There are 2-3 errors in grammar, spelling, and sentence formation.
Below Average Effort

There are 4-5 errors in grammar, spelling, and sentence formation.
Poor Effort

There are 6 or more errors in grammar, spelling, and sentence formation.
Editing and Publishing

Creative ideas and neatness are present throughout with text and illustrations. Book is bound together appropriately and neatly.

Excellent Effort

Project is creative and all elements of a well-planned children's book are present. Finished book is bound together to withstand multiple readings.
Average Effort

Neatness is present, but student was capable of more creative work. Finished book is bound together but may not be able to withstand multiple readings.
Below Average Effort

Project has pencil marks and eraser marks throughout. Little time or effort seemed to be put forth. Finished book is barely bound together and will not withstand multiple readings.
Poor Effort

The project is sloppy and incomplete. Finished book is not bound together at all.
