Recitation Rubric for scoring recitation of prose piece. Based on NJCL sight recitation judging.
	Advanced 3 pts	Intermediate 2 pts	Novice 1 pts
Confidence Has the student practiced? Does he/she read with conviction?	Advanced Student reads selection confidently, and with good expression.	Intermediate Student reads selection confidently.	Novice Student is tentative, frequently pausing or backing up in the reading.
Continuity/Phrasing/Fluidity How well does the student use his/her understanding of the story to inform his/her reading?	Advanced Student's reading of selection is natural; no unwarranted pauses. Student varies pitch and does not speak in monotone.	Intermediate Student adequately conveys meaning with pauses.	Novice Pauses interfere with natural flow of language. Reading may be fragmented; barely intelligible.
Vowel Quality & Length Are vowels pronounced correctly? Is a difference made between short and long vowels?	Advanced All or most vowels are pronounced correctly with sensitivity to long and short quantities.	Intermediate Vowels are recognizable. Some attempt at distinguishing between long and short vowels has been made.	Novice Numerous errors in pronouncing vowels. Errors make understanding the German difficult.
Consonant Quality Are consonants pronounced correctly?	Advanced All or most consonants are pronounced correctly.	Intermediate Most consonants are pronounced correctly.	Novice Numerous errors in pronouncing consonants.
Word Accents Does the student stress each word on the correct syllable?	Advanced All words are accented correctly.	Intermediate Most words are accented correctly.	Novice Numerous errors cause the reading to be unintelligible in places.
