Words/Writing	Novice I used ordinary words that are not very interesting. My meaning may not be clear to the reader.	Partially Proficient I used some interesting words. My words tell what I mean.	Proficient I used some of the right words that make good pictures in the reader's head.	Advanced I used a variety of descriptive words that make clear pictures in the reader's head.
Characteristics of Poetry	Novice My poem contains 8 similes. My poem may or may not have a title.	Partially Proficient My poem contains 9 similes. My poem has a title.	Proficient My poem contains 10 similes. My poem has a title.	Advanced My poem contains more than 10 similes. My poem has a title.
Spelling and Punctuation	Novice The final draft has more than 4 misspelled words in it. I might have missed some punctuation.	Partially Proficient The final draft has only 3 spelling errors in it. I might have missed some punctuation.	Proficient The final draft has only 1-2 spelling errors in it. The punctuation is done well.	Advanced The final draft has no spelling errors in it. The punctuation is done well.
Neatness	Novice The final draft is not very neat or very readable. It looks like I just wanted to get done with my poem. There may be erase marks on it.	Partially Proficient The final draft is readable. It looks like I might have been in a hurry on a couple of parts. There may be erase marks on it.	Proficient The final draft is readable and clean.
