Journal entry has 3 complete sentences or less in each paragraph.
Poor

Journal response has not been completed at all.
Sentence Structure

Student shows use of complete sentences. Student uses capital letters, end punctuation and writes using "fifth grade" sentences.

Above Average

Student uses proper sentence form and writes quality, fifth grade sentences.
Average

The student makes a few errors in capitalization or punctuation. Fifth grade sentences are generally used.
Below Average

The student makes numerous errors in capitalization or punctuation. Sentences show weak structure.
Poor

Poor use of capitalization and/or punctuation. Fifth grade sentences are not used.
Content

Responses are fully developed and on topic and show depth of thought.

Above Average

Responses are fully developed and strongly on-topic. They reflect the students ideas and/or opinions in a well thought-out paragraph.
Average

Responses are acceptably developed and remain on-topic for the most part. Student has put some thoughts or ideas into the paragraph.
Below Average

Responses are underdeveloped and do not remain on-topic. There is a lack of effort to show the student's own ideas/opinions.
Poor

Response is critically underdeveloped and lacking in the key areas of basic English.
