Poetry Project Rubric 
This project is the final assessment in the unit of Poetry. This was a 5 day task wherein students compiled original poetry the use of imagery, figurative language, mood, and rhyming, etc. Poems showcase various poetry styles learned, plus free verse poetry of the student.

Established

The portfolio is missing 1-2 of the required content or format. The portfolio cover/ thematic art is mostly planned.
Excelling

The portfolio meets 100% of the required content and format. The portfolio cover/thematic art is fully planned significant.
Originality

Beginning

Work appears to be thoughtless or rushed. Work is very repetitive and ideas seem cliched, impersonal or unoriginal. Poems do not meet requirements.
Developing

The poems are creative, but don't demonstrate a variety of approaches. Poems are not varied and do not meet most of the requirements.
Established

Poems are creative and thoughtful. They are carefully written, but development or craft could go further. Most poems meet requirements.
Excelling

Poems are creative and original. It is evident that the poet put thought into their words and innovatively conveyed their ideas and emotions. Poems meet all requirements.

The poems did not include any literary devices such as imagery, sound effects and rhyming pattern. No figurative language was used such as alliteration.
Developing

The poems use some literary devices and figurative language.

The poems incorporate several literary devices and figurative language which demonstrate creativity.

The portfolio demonstrates varied and appropriate application of literary devices and figurative language discussed in class.
Grammar & Punctuation

Beginning

There are numerous spelling, diction, or grammar errors in the poems. Did not follow format of each poem.
Developing

The poet's intended meaning is muddled by some spelling, diction or grammar errors in the poems. Followed format to some degree.
Established

Some spelling, diction or grammar mistakes are evident, but do not diminish meaning in poems. Followed format - one or two errors.
Excelling

Proper use of modern English spelling, diction and grammar are employed consistently throughout portfolio. Followed format exactly.
Attractiveness/Neatness

Beginning

The poems and portfolio are messy or disorganized. Images are not included or related and does not enhance the project. The project was not put together correctly.
Developing

The poems and portfolio show some thoughtfulness in their presentation. Images were not related or included but were used to enhance the presentation of the project. The project was not put together properly.
Established

The poems and portfolio are attractive in terms of design, layout and neatness and 1-2 images are included but not related to the poems. Overall presentation is good. The project was put together well and mostly correct.
Excelling

The portfolio is exceptionally attractive in terms of design, layout and neatness. All images used are related to the poems and enhances the overall presentation of the portfolio.The portfolio was submitted and put together correctly.
