Essay Rubric Essay Rubric This rubric can be used for a number of essays in ESL writing classes, specifically designed for more advanced proficiency levels. The specific content and vocabulary knowledge of the criteria is from Chapter 1 of the Focus on Vocabulary textbook. Content	Excellent The student demonstrates knowledge of the main reading points on societal change; it is well developed with a number of good details and examples for both the parents' generation and the students'.	Good Most of the main points are given from the reading and are accurate; it is developed with some details and examples, though there is room for more description. an essay at this level has between 250-350 words.	Fair An essay at this level has little written; while it may have one point from the reading, it lacks supporting details for the question, or may be unrelated to the topic; an essay at this level has about 100-200 words.	Poor This essay may have about 100 words; while it may contain one point from the reading, it may be off topic, inaccurate, or provide very little to no details relating to the question.
Organization	Excellent The essay is well organized with distinct paragraphs; the first should be a summary of the main points of the reading; Paragraphs are indented and contain good topic sentences.	Good While there is some organization of ideas, the student may not indent or create new paragraphs for new ideas; an attempt at topic sentences is made but need work or ideas at times run together.	Fair There may be one paragraph only, or many lines (sentences begin on a new line); the paragraphs are not separated by indentations; ideas do not tranistion well; there are no topic sentences.	Poor Ideas are put together out of order and no real attempt at organization has been made.
Language	Excellent An essay at this level has generally good grammar, vocabulary, and mechanics; although there may be a few errors in word choice or usage, spelling, and punctuation, the meaning is always clear.	Good An essay at this level uses some good grammatical structures and vocabulary, but there may be a significant number of errors which affect meaning and readability. Mechanics mistakes are more frequent.	Fair There may be so many errors in grammar, vocabulary usage, and mechanics to fully comprehend the meaning, or it may cause for frequent re-reading of sentences.	Poor The language in the essay is marked by frequent and severe errors, which may or may not cause great confusion.
