Content/Thinking/Reading Strategies	Excellent The student shows deep understanding of text. He/she demonstrates awareness of 3 or more reading strategies or uses a minimum of 3 sentence prompts to share his/her thinking. Specific details are included to support his/her thinking.	Good The student shows understanding of text. He/she demonstrates awareness of two reading strategies or uses 2 sentence prompts to share his/her thinking. The student does not support responses with specific details.	Fair The reader gave a summary only or only used 2 examples of reading strategies/sentence leads in their response. There was only a small attempt to share his/her thinking.	Below Average The student gave a limited summary of the story and/or does not show evidence of using reading strategies to share his/her thinking.
Neatness and Presentation	Excellent The letter is very neat and easy to read. The letter includes a greeting, date and closing. The book title is included.	Good The letter is includes the required information but is difficult to read or the letter is missing one of the letter requirements.	Fair The letter is missing more than one of the letter requirements and is difficult to read.	Below Average The letter does not include any of the letter requirements and can not be read clearly.
Grammar	Excellent The letter does not have any errors in capitalization or ending punctuation.	Good The letter has no more than 3 errors in capitalization or punctuation.	Fair The letter has multiple errors in punctuation and capitalization but understanding is clear.	Below Average The letter has multiple errors that interfere with understanding.
