Expression and Volume

Level 1

Reads mostly word by word. Very little variation or enthusiasm in voice. Little sense of trying to make text sound like natural language. Volume is generally very soft.

Some expression, but not consistent. Attempts to use voice to make text sound like natural language, but not all the time. Volume is generally soft. There is very little vocal variation.

Sounds like natural language. Reading has good expression and enthusiasm. The reader is able to vary some expression and volume depending on the poem.

Phrasing

Level 1

Sounds much like a "robot." Reads mostly word by word with little, if any, multi-word phrasing.

Reads most of the poem in phrases, but is not consistant. A small portion of the text may be read with expression.

Almost all of the reading is appropriately phrased. Most of the reading is in meaningful phrase groups, depending on the poem. There is some attention to expression.

Smoothness/Accuracy/Automaticity

Level 1

Long pauses between words or phrases. Very choppy. Little, if any, attention to punctuation. The poem was not practiced and it is evident.

A few "jerks" in the reading where the student stops to problem solve. Flow becomes disruptive. Pauses may be due to lack of preparation or failure to observe punctuation. An additional practice session would have added to the performance.

Reading is mostly smooth and rehearsed. Payed some attention to punctuation and knew most of the words in the poem.

Reading is very smooth and well rehearsed. Payed attention to punctuation and knew all of the words in the poem. Practice and preparation are obvious.
Pacing

Level 1

Poem was read way too fast, or way too slow and it took away from the meaning of the poem.
Level 2

At times, the poem was read too fast/slow, but for the most part, it was read at an appropriate pace.
Level 3

The reading of the poem was at a good pace. It mostly allowed audience enough time to think about the meaning of the poem.
Level 4

The reading of the poem was at a perfect pace. (not too fast or too slow) It allowed audience enough time to think about the meaning of the poem.
Listening

Level 1

Student was actively not paying attention to the other poems being read. They were disruptive and disrespectful
Level 2

Student had difficulty paying attention for the entire poetry reading. They were at times disruptive and disrespectful
Level 3

Student payed attention to the other poems being read for the most part. There was little disruption or talking out, and displayed some level of encoruagement
to other classmates.
Level 4

Student payed close attention to their classmates as they read their poetry. They were respectful and encouraging at all times.
