Use of line and shape for features	Exceeding Portrait is VERY carefully drawn; ALL features (eyes, nose, mouth, eyebrows, hair, ears, neck and shoulders) drawn in correct proportion.	Accomplished Portrait is carefully drawn, has all features (eyes, nose, mouth, eyebrows, hair, ears, neck and shoulders) in correct proportion.	Developing Portrait lacks some features (eyes, nose, mouth, eyebrows, hair, or ears), or features are drawn out of proportion. Neck and shoulders are not included or drawn sloppily.	Emerging Much detail is missing. Features not easily recognizable or are ramdomly placed.
Use of shape to focus image	Exceeding DRAWN WITH CARE. Space is allowed for a completed head and background.	Accomplished Student draws an appropriate closed shape to contain features and allows for a background.	Developing Head is too small (takes up less than half the paper). Shape is not enclosed and neck and shoulders are missing or not evident.	Emerging Unfinished or unsatisfactory. Most of the features are unrecognizable.
Use of line and shape in background	Exceeding Background is well-developed with relationship of parts to the whole.	Accomplished Background space is evident but not developed.	Developing Non-representational marks are visible in background.	Emerging Unfinished or unsatisfactory.No background is evident.
Effort	Exceeding Class time is used VERY WELL Respect to fellow students, the teacher, and materials is VERY evident throughout the entire class.	Accomplished The project is finished in the class time allowed. Student works well.	Developing Class time is NOT USED WELL. Student is often off task and not respectful of fellow students, the teacher, and/or materials.	Emerging Little or no effort for this project demonstrated.
Craftsmanship	Exceeding The materials are used VERY skillfully and shows excellent technique.	Accomplished Student uses the materials appropriately and shows good technique.	Developing Use of materials and technique is basic.	Emerging Materials and technique incorrectly used.
