Expression and Volume
emerging
Reads mostly word by word. Very little variation or enthusiasm in voice. Little sense of trying to make text sound like natural language. Volume is generally very soft.
approaching level
Some expression, but not consistent. Attempts to use voice to make text sound like natural language, but not all the time. Volume is generally soft. There is very little vocal variation.
at level
Sounds like natural language. Reading has excellent expression and enthusiasm. The reader is able to vary expression and volume depending on the poem.
Phrasing
emerging
Sounds much like a "robot." Reads mostly word by word with little, if any, multi-word phrasing.
approaching level
Reads most of the poem in phrases, but is not consistant. A small portion of the text may be read with expression.
at level
Almost all of the reading is appropriately phrased. Reading is in larger, meaningful phrase groups, depending on the poem. There is much attention to expression.
Smoothness/Accuracy/Automaticity
emerging
Long pauses between words or phrases. Very choppy. Little, if any, attention to punctuation. The poem was not practiced and it is evident.
approaching level
A few "jerks" in the reading where the student stops to problem solve. Flow becomes disruptive. Pauses may be due to lack of preparation or failure to observe punctuation. An additional practice session would have added to the performance.
at level
Reading is very smooth and well rehearsed. Payed attention to punctuation and knew all of the words in the poem. Practice and preparation are obvious.
Pacing
emerging
Poem was read way too fast, or way too slow and it took away from the meaning of the poem.
approaching level
At times, the poem was read too fast/slow, but for the most part, it was read at an appropriate pace.
at level
The reading of the poem was at a perfect pace. (not too fast or too slow) It allowed audience enough time to think about the meaning of the poem.
