Reads moderately slowly; word by word. Extended pauses or hesitation. Ignores some punctuation.
Proficient Reader

Reads fast and slow throughout reading.
Some choppiness. Appropriate pausing for MOST punctuation
Advanced Reader

Reads at a conversational pace throughout the reading. Effortless and automatic. Appropriate pausing for ALL punctuation.
Accuracy

To calculate reading accuracy, take the number of words read and subtract the number of errors. Take that total and divide it by the number of words read to find the percentage.

Student reads the passage with many mistakes.

Progressing Reader

Student is able to read the passage with a few mistakes.
90% - 94% accuracy
Proficient Reader

Student is able to read the passage with very few mistakes.
95% - 100% accuracy
Advanced Reader

Student is able to read the passage without mistakes.
100% accuracy
Expression

At-Risk Reader

Reads the selection word by word in a monotone voice.
Progressing Reader

Reads the selection with few signs of emotion or expression. May attempt to show emotion at times.
Proficient Reader

Reads the selection with SOME reasonable expression, appropriate phrasing, and intonation.
Advanced Reader

Reads the selection expressively, with appropriate phrasing and intonation.
Example: whispers, shouts, sounds worried, shows excitement with exclamation marks, etc.
Retell

At-Risk Reader

Student does not recall any details from the selection.
Progressing Reader

Student recalls some detail from the selection in random order.
Proficient Reader

Student is able to retell 3 or more important details from the selection out sequence.
Advanced Reader

Student is able to retell 3 or more important details from the selection in correct sequence.
Oral Comprehension Questions

At-Risk Reader

Student does not answer questions correctly, and struggles to recall detail.
Progressing Reader

Student is able to recall details from the story, but does not correctly answer the questions.
Proficient Reader

Student is able to answer the questions correctly, but is vague about recalling details.
Advanced Reader

Student is able to answer questions completely and correctly with detail.
Strategies
