Character Analysis 
Write a well-developed, five paragraph essay, analyzing your favorite character from your independent reading novel. In the essay, you must discuss your character's traits, relationships, motivations, and experiences. Be sure to identify if the character is static or dynamic. Relevant evidence must be used and cited to support your thoughts and opinions.

Interpretation of the character is mostly accurate. Textual references may be based on insufficient textual references

Interpretation of the character is inaccurate and based on random textual references
Application of Character

Exceeds Standard

Character interpretation is extended beyond explanation through detailed elaboration. A conclusion is made and explained sufficiently to connect character to the plot and theme.
Meets Standard

Interpretation is extended through brief elaboration and connected to plot, but the explanation is not relevant to the theme.
Approaching Standard

Interpretation is not extended beyond the explanation and support. A logical connection is made between character and plot, however, the explanation is brief and insufficient in order for the reader to fully understand the connection.
Far Below Standard

Interpretation is not extended beyond the explanation and support. No connection is made to plot, or connection does not follow logically from character interpretation.
Grammar/Vocabulary/Spelling

Exceeds Standard

Shows excellent understanding and application of grammar, vocabulary definitions, and spelling.
Meets Standard

Shows great understanding of grammar concepts, but sentences lack full clarity and mastery of tenses and spelling.
Approaching Standard

Shows basic understanding of grammar concepts, but fails to recognize and use proper tenses to form sentences while understanding word meaning and spelling properly.
Far Below Standard

Shows insufficient understanding of past, present, and future tenses along with vocabulary meaning and spelling.
