MLA format, min. 1 page to max. 2 pages, attention to spelling, grammar, and use of language.

Student may or may not utilize MLA format, barely meets the minimum page length and/or greatly exceeds the maximum, and the paper has many instances of spelling/grammar mistakes or confusing language.
Proficient

Student utilizes MLA format, meets min/max page length requirement, and the paper has few instances of spelling/grammar mistakes or confusing language.
Advanced

Student utilizes MLA format, exceeds minimum page length but not the maximum, and the paper is free of spelling/grammar mistakes and confusing language.
Focus

Answer all parts of question/respond to all statements with clarity and focus.

Needs Improvement

Student neglects to address a crucial aspect of the question/respond to significant statements. The writing is disjointed and needs transitions and a consistent focus.
Proficient

Student addresses the crux of the question but may miss a more minor part/neglect to respond to all statements. The writing is mostly organized but may benefit from transitions and/or a more consistent focus.
Advanced

Student addresses all parts of question/responds to all statements in an organized, coherent manner that maintains a consistent focus.
Specificity

Utilize concrete examples/details to support ideas.

Needs Improvement

Student needs more detail to demonstrate adequate knowledge of reading/attention to prompt. Any ideas present may not be adequately supported due to lack of detail and the result is a generic response.
Proficient

Student uses adequate detail that demonstrates knowledge of the reading/some reflection on the prompt and supports ideas, but more specific detail may be more engaging.
Advanced

Student uses several concrete details that demonstrate a close reading/thoughtful reflection to support ideas and engage the reader.
Connectedness

Demonstrate a sincere attempt to explore the material and produce a personal appreciation.

Needs Improvement

Student completes the assignment in a perfunctory manner.
Proficient

Student demonstrates thoughtfulness for the assignment but may need to take more risks/dig a little deeper to produce a more considerable appreciation for the material.
Advanced

Student demonstrates thoughtfulness and a sincere attempt to be engaged with the material and create a meaningful appreciation.
