3rd Grade Compare and Contrast writing rubric

This rubric is used to judge a pumpkin decorating contest.

Poster should be divided into 6 sections. The first section should be used to write the titles, author, and identify main character and setting. The other 5 sections should be used to illustrate five scenes from the book. Each illustration should be described in a caption (identifying characters in each scene) and its importance.

Make several puppets to use in retelling the important events from Sarah, Plain and Tall.

Students will choose a specific topic to write a poem that contains 3 or more stanzas with 4 lines in each stanza. The poem will have a consistent rhyme scheme throghout the poem.

Students will describe a favorite place using strong verbs and sensory words to create a descriptive essay. Writing will be graded on capitalization, punctuation, use of main idea, supporting major details and minor details, spelling, plural and possessive noun use, subject/verb tense and agreement, and use of sensory words and strong verbs. Your essay must include two similes and one metaphor. Use adjectives from our class list.

Students will write 6 or more sentences describing themselves with similes. This will be illustrated with a self portrait.

A How-to Essay is a written, step-by-step explanation of a process. Choose a process that you enjoy and write a how-to essay that will help readers perform the process, even if it's something they've never done before.

Students are to write a short story that demonstrates their understanding of the stages of plot and the characteristics of a short story.
