Illustration Project (Mythical Creatures)
Students imagine their own sort of mythical creature or character to write a short story about and illustrate using various drawing mediums.

Inspirational Quotes Wall Art/Printmaking
Final product - A unique wall hanging. Choose an inspirational quote and your own specific lettering/font. Use monotype and collagraph printmaking methods to create a colorful, abstract background. Use pencil, marker, crayon, oil pastels and colored pencils to make quote stand out.

Perspective Drawing/Painting
Students learn about linear perspective including one and two-point perspective as well as overlapping, placement, size and atmospheric perspective. Focus is on students being able to create the illusion of a 3D space on a 2D paper. Color theory is also covered as students work with tempera paint or pastels to create color, value and shading in their work.

5th Grade Still Life Drawing
Students experience using a view finder and either colored pencils or watercolors to draw and shade at least 3 still life objects. Focus is on contour drawing and shading to add value as well overlapping lines to show depth.

Drawing with a Grid
Students learn how to use the grid technique as a way to achieve correct proportions in an artwork. Students use contour drawing with the grid to create an outline of their chosen subject shown in a photo. Students review and learn how to use shading techniques and media to add value and depth to their artwork.

Animation
Students will develop an original animation story of their choice and then create digital drawings of the characters. The digital drawings will be used along with background scenes to create a short animation/stop motion video.

Students learn basic proportions of the human figure. Students apply this knowledge as they design and create their own unique action figures. Students will create a comic strip of their figures as well.

Optical Illusions and Tessellations
Students learn about Op-Art and how artists use lines and shading to create optical illusions. Students also learn about the artist M.C. Escher and tessellations. After creating an original tessellation outline students explore various options to add color, pattern and textures that will enhance these creative optical illusions.

Portrait Drawing with a Grid

Clay Slab Sculpture
Students learn how to build a 3D form or sculpture using a flat 2-D shapes cut from a clay slab as well as clay coils. Students will review and use slipping and scoring. Students will review and learn new techniques for adding details and textures.

A 3D ceramic sculpture built from coils of clay. Idea is connected to some aspect of oceanography.

Free Choice Painting
Students choose 3 art movements then discover artwork created and techniques used by artists who worked in those movements. Students create design for painting based on movements and artists learned about. Students choose painting techniques and painting medium. Students may interpret and modify information from art movements, but must be able to explain importance. Students will review color theory and color schemes. Students keep own work stations and supplies cleaned and stored properly.

Clay Animal Homes
Students choose an animal and consider that animal's real habitat in nature. Then students design an imaginative "home" or realistic looking habitat for the animal. Then students build the home or habitat out of clay slabs. Students may also build the animal if they wish.
